Nice Weekend

Bill and Glenn's Indiana friend, Jeff, are taking the gutters off of our old house. Jeff moved here from Carmel and bought an old house - so can use them!!

More pictures from the fire last night. Bill said he was in the bucket for a while. The 2 fire depts. fought it for about 4 hours. The house is a total loss.

Today we went to the ATV Pull which was a first for our town. We knew a few of the guys pulling (and there were a couple women). Diane, Todd & Lacey were there.

Now that we have the wall section of cabinets in the new garage, we're working on putting stuff away and cleaning up the garage. I think I forgot to mention that Bill broke the backhoe yesterday so no more house destruction for a while.

Nice weather today, good day for grilling - nice weekend.

July 4th House Fire

Bill knocked a hole in the kitchen wall to get the refrigerator and last section of cabinets out. Guess he felt the need to sweep the kitchen floor one last time??

We had help from the Duitscher family moving the last section of cabinets over to the new garage.

Bill's mom's last visit to the old house.

Bill is at a house fire right now. I just heard on the scanner that the roof is about to collapse. The owners were working outside but they weren't the ones to see the fire first. Luckily they were not living there yet. A holiday isn't a good time for a fire. Luckily several of the volunteer firemen did show up but they also called Pocahontas for help. (more pictures tomorrow)

More Destruction

This is the worst part of the old house - the moldy, cracking, buckling walls of the foundation. Bill has beaten on this one a little to see what was behind the pink stuff. It's very "brittle" concrete.

The kitchen. The old refrig. is still in there and a large, floor to ceiling section of cabinets. Bill's going to take them out to put in our new garage when he gets a kitchen wall knocked out.

Bill's been having fun using the hammer to pull stuff apart and see why things were the way they were like some of the plumbing and wiring.

Don't you wish you could be here to see the old house being knocked down - or even help (guy thing)? Hmmm, if I could only figure out how to embed a video in the blog . . . that would be fun! There is a way . . . but that requires looking for instructions and reading them.

Misc.

Picture of the old well. Bill pulled the pump out. Now we can call the "well drilling co." to come out and fill it which I guess they have to do.
Bill sprayed beans today and I mowed one place.

When the time came last week, I forgot about going to our first Farmers Market of the season so made sure I got there today. Looked like a nice turnout with both vendors & customers. Our favorite is Beth's Hearty Cracked Wheat Bread. It's nice & crunchy toasted. I also got some caramel rolls - Bill likes them - and a little Scandinavian Almond Cake. The girl that makes those is saving the money from her sales for college and she does quite well.

I made a cherry pie with the cherries picked at Mom's. I remember her making lattice topped cherry pies when I was young. Remember me making the pie a month for our Mayor? She gave me this pretty pie pan with red bird that you bake in the middle! It's supposed to let the steam out its beak so your fruit pies don't run over - and it worked!! This was my first time to use it. Now I need to find the ring I think I have that keeps the outer edge of the crust from getting too brown! Used foil strips - but too late.

Demolition Has Begun

Since we didn't have any takers on the free house offer, now people can come and take what they can use before it's torn down very soon! One guy bought the old air conditioner for almost nothing and another guy is taking the fairly new but cheap vinyl windows Bill had put in - and some trim. Bill had replaced the living room, kitchen & bathroom windows. This guy may take some of the gutters too. Anybody need a toilet? That's about all that's left!

When Bill got home tonight, he had fun knocking some holes in the walls in various places and finding out for sure that there really was NO insulation in this house! Explains the high heating and air conditioning bills and drafty conditions!

I said tonight "whew, now it for sure looks like there is no way we can move back in here"!

I went to the auction in Poky this evening and got the one box I wanted for $1 (and had to take another one), but didn't have the patience to wait around to try to buy a little refrigerator for my basement stamping classroom. Things were selling cheap so I probably should've stuck it out.

Our electrician e mailed me tonight and asked us to count how many under cabinet lights we have and how many bulbs. Bill did and said "tell him that'll be a minimum one hour labor charge with no mileage since we were already in the kitchen"! :)

Last night Bill & I went out to eat for our anniversary in the town of Emmetsburg. To get there, you go through Mallard. I've always liked their sign at the edge of town! "Welcome to Mallard - We're Friendly Ducks". Their gas station used to always have the cheapest gas around - but not right now.

Emmetsburg has a nice lake so after we ate, we drove all the way around the lake and then stopped at DQ for twist cones.

Bill is spraying the beans today.
